Jason Dunn

Jason Dunn is an international pioneer in the fields of commercial space, digital manufacturing, and disruptive technologies. In 2014 he was recognized by Forbes on the prestigious “30 Under 30” list.

Jason is the Co-Founder of Made In Space, Inc. (MIS), which is best known for being the first organization to manufacture off Earth. Since conception, MIS has led the aerospace industry in leveraging space manufacturing technology to enable new space missions. Made In Space had a successful exit in May 2020, marking one of the first commercial space start-ups to reach this achievement.

Dunn believes that to solve the worlds biggest problems we must break free from the limits to growth found on our finite planet and move humanity’s footprint into space.

How To Lead In A Time When Change Goes Exponential

In this lecture Dunn shares his views on what is needed from leaders today, in a time when the rate of change in our world is increasing. Every day it seems as if we wake up to a world that is different than yesterday and it is hard to keep up. Why is this change happening and is it good or bad? Dunn explains what this all means and gives some hope as well as some important to hear truths that we all can implement in our lives to become leaders and stewards of a better tomorrow. Key Takeaways: Data driven analysis of the rate the world is changing and why, What this change means and what the future holds, How we can become our better selves by anticipating change better and using it to make the world a better place.

10 Surprising Ways That The Space Industry Will Impact Our Lives

In this lecture Dunn educates the audience on the innovations taking place in the commercial space industry and extrapolates on how it will impact the lives and the economies on Earth. The first trillionaires will be made in space, and Dunn outlines how and who this may be. His talk draws on his time building Made In Space and the insight he gathered from working along side NASA, DARPA, and the commercial space industry. All 10 concepts presented here are shown in a sequential roadmap from soonest to furthest out with predictions on when we might see them come online. Key takeaways: where to invest in aerospace, what terrestrial businesses are prime for disruption from the space sector, how to plan for the upcoming space industrialization boom.

Secrets from Starting, Growing, and Selling a Startup

In this lecture Dunn shares anecdotes from the past decade of Made In Space from formation to exit. Creating a successful company is hard, but doing this in the aerospace industry is even harder. Jason shares the secrets of success that worked for the Made In Space team and some insight on how others may use the same methods. Listeners will be enthralled by the challenges of establishing a business where winning over NASA was key, what happened when the entire business was at stake on top of a rocket, and when they sold the business in the height of COVID-19. Key takeaways: secrets of success for entrepreneurs, how big companies should do intrapreneurship, how to find customers when you don’t have a product, how to harness creative innovation.

Earth’s Exoskeleton

In May of 2019, Marina Koren wrote in The Atlantic that with Elon Musk’s plans to launch 12,000 satellites, as well as many other private companies following in his footsteps, we are now building an “exoskeleton” around our planet. Dunn believes that this exoskeleton will have a profound impact on earth – from how we conduct business to monitoring the health of the planet. The next generation of satellites are sophisticated – many of them are full of sensors, cameras, and in many ways should be considered autonomous robots rather than satellites. These satellites, combined with the new space-based manufacturing industry, and the likely arrival of additional space stations, will be creating a new layer of robotics, complex sensors, data and life around the earth. This exoskeleton will communicate with our internet of terrestrial ships, cars, drones and robots, as well as provide tremendous amounts of live data on our oceans, climate, forests, biodiversity, land, cities and more. It will also provide a launch point to explore of other planets and celestial bodies. Key Takeaways: Inspiration for how we may overcome the biggest challenge of our time – how to live in harmony with our planet.
